How do I import Outcomes into Canvas?

Answer

Despite the ability to manually add outcomes for a course, Canvas also allows for the addition of outcomes via import by spreadsheet.  That said, there are several requirements for importing outcomes:

  • The uploaded file must be in CSV (Comma Separated Values) format.
  • The file must be formatted properly according to Canvas's standard field values.
  • There are a minimum of three required fields that must used within the header of the file. These fields are:
    • vendor_guid
    • object_type
    • title
  • Each outcome's vendor_guid field must be must be unique.

Once the file is properly formatted and ready for import, the instructions for doing so are located here.

Note that after a successful import, the most convenient method to transfer outcomes between a faculty member's courses is to use the Import Course Content functionality as opposed to re-uploading outcomes with the same file (which will not work).  It is highly encouraged to import outcomes to a DEV course first via file upload, and then use the Import Course Content feature to move outcomes to an active course.
