Does Marian use OpenAthens? Do I have an Open Athens account?
Answer
Marian University Libraries has discontinued the use of OpenAthens.
OpenAthens Alternative -- Libkey Nomad
Download a browser extension called Libkey Nomad -- It is a REALLY slick piece of software that will automatically link you to the full text of our library's electronic resources. For more information --> Libkey Nomad
What happened to Open Athens?
Open Athens was an "authentication method" for off-site access to Library materials for licensed users of our libraries that did NOT have a network credential. A network credential is a username and password you use for Email and Canvas. The Marian Libraries no longer have a need for the use of Open-Athens. See the new alternative Libkey Nomad link above.
Users do NOT have an OpenAthens username and password, additionally, you do not need one.
More detail about Open Athens.
It is also important to understand that an OpenAthens credential did NOT grant users access to additional electronic materials over and above what we already offer you on our library page/database page and electronic journal pages and Libkey Nomad. Often because vendors and publishers ALLOW for OpenAthens account access, users think once they are granted an OpenAthens account they would get additional access -- this does NOT happen. Whatever access the library has with vendors and publishers with the normal network credentials (Email/Canvas UN/PW) this access is used to match what you can gain via OpenAthens.
